Officials with the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office have not ruled out foul play in the ongoing inquiry of a recent church fire in Ashford.
Public Information Specialist Stephen Holmes for the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office said foul play has not been ruled out in the church fire in Ashford earlier this month.
The fire happened on Friday, Nov. 1 at the intersection of Third Avenue and Church Street at the building that formerly housed Ashford Baptist Church. The building more recently housed the Church of Faith.
Holmes said just because foul play has not yet been ruled out, that did not necessarily mean fire investigators had deemed the fire criminal or arson related. He said the investigation into the fire, including the cause, remains ongoing.
Investigators with the federal agency of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also remain involved in the inquiry.
Michael Knight, a spokesperson for the ATF, said their investigators are working with the Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office,, along with the Dothan Arson Task Force. Knight said investigators with ATF automatically respond to all church fires.
The church suffered major damages due to the fire.
