‘Big Cat’ recruiting weekend makes ‘Big Noise’

June 01, 2009

After reading about, and watching a little video of Auburn’s ‘Big Cat’ recruiting weekend, it appears the Tiger coaches accomplished their mission.
I’m not sure if everything that went on was within NCAA guidelines, but I do know it certainly put Auburn’s recruiting efforts back in the spotlight - again.
The limo tour of the coaches created quite a stir, and now this.
Say what you want, but Auburn coaches are getting very creative in getting top athletes from around the country to at least take a look at the football program.
While Tuberville and Co. appeared to be getting stale in their final years, Chizik and his crew are making some big noise.
You’ve got to give them credit.
One has to wonder what’s next. It certainly has made for an interesting off-season.

Wrestling legends

May 27, 2009

By Jon Johnson

It was fun for me to interview some professional wrestling legends over the past week - Bob Armstrong, Harley Race and Jerry Stubbs. These are guys from the old-school of wrestling, when it was fun stuff - not the mess you see on TV today.
There’s a big card in Dothan on Friday night at the Civic Center, bringing back a bunch of the old-school wrestlers for one final hurrah.
It ought to be a lot of fun.

Bob Armstrong and rasslin’

May 22, 2009

By Jon Johnson

I interviewed pro wrestling legend Bob Armstrong on Wednesday morning for a story planned to run on Tuesday. Armstrong, and a number of old-school legends, will be in Dothan next Friday night as part of a big show at the Civic Center.
Armstrong, who turns 70 this year, was an absolute delight to interview.
I’ve always been intrigued by the wrestlers of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their lives on the road are most remarkable.
While I had a face-to-face interview with Armstrong, I also was able to talk to eight-time world champ Harley Race and Jerry Stubbs, a longtime favorite in Dothan, by phone.
The three will be part of what’s being billed as the Farewell 2 Legends card.

Northview sort of day

May 18, 2009

By Jon Johnson

As I wrap up a day of work, it comes to me that it’s been a Northview-filled day of sorts.
This afternoon, I met Northview soccer player Trevor Parrish at the soccer fields for his Super 12 photo shoot. Parrish, a tremendous player this season for the Cougars, informed me he’ll be playing his college soccer at Chaminade in Hawaii. What an awesome way to spend four years of school.
Later in the day, Mason Meredeth, a former Northview baseball standout, called as I had requested and we lined up an interview for later in the week. Meredeth just finished an outstanding season at Samford.
And finally, I interviewed Stephon McIntyre, a student at Northview who will be competing in the Junior National Olympics in Denver next month. I watched him train just a bit, and he was impressive. Longtime trainer Johnny Trawick is extremely impressed with the 16-year-old.

Soccer Super 12

May 14, 2009

By Jon Johnson

The Super 12 photos for boys and girls soccer were held this afternoon, and 23 of the 24 players showed up. The lone guy missing had to work, and is scheduled for a photo on Monday.
That’s Super news for me.
The soccer folks always seem appreciative of the honor, and it makes it more enjoyable to put it all together.
Not sure when we’ll run the photos in the newspaper, but likely it will be the end of next week.
Found out today Malcolm Colbert, the longtime Enterprise girls soccer coach, is stepping aside. He had some health issues this year, and had actually decided before the season this would be his last.
Colbert is a good guy, and I certainly wish him well.
