A Dale County Sheriff’s deputy resigned amid allegations he reviewed pornographic material on a computer in a sheriff’s department vehicle, according to reports.
Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson confirmed former deputy Mike Roskum had resigned from the department after a complaint he was using the computer for unrelated work purposes.
Olson said Roskum admitted to looking at pornography on the computer and was given the option to resign from the department.
Roskum now works with Newton Police Department, according to town Chief John Beistline.
Beistline said there were no charges of any wrongdoing against Roskum that would have prevented him from being hired as an officer in Newton.
Beistline said he was not sure whether “any allegations” were why Roskum resigned from the sheriff’s department, but that Roskum had years of law enforcement experience.
“To my knowledge he wasn’t fired and there’s no allegations of criminal wrongdoing. I worked with him for years. He’s a good professional officer,” Beistline said.
Olson said the sheriff’s department checks on any complaints it receives regarding its personnel.
“(The computer) is public property. It’s for profession and is to be used for business,” Olson said.

There has been a big turnover of deputies at the Dale County Sheriff’s Office. It makes you wonder what is going on down there? Is there widespread corruption, or just an unhappy workplace? John Beistline was a deputy there at one time as well. Is Dale County training law enforcement officials for other agencies? There is something going on there. Perhaps an excellent reporter should examine the financial books and see how Sheriff Olson is managing his office. There have been troubles with the jail, problems with deputies and they are buying all the new equipment such as tricked-out Dodge Chargers and helicopter surveillance equipment. Sheriff Olson always seems to be picking-up the check at the local restaurants, but I never see him out doing work. His waist line seems to be growing, while our tax dollars pick-up the tab. I do not know what the turnover rate is for deputies and jailers in Dale County, but I suspect it is probably double the surrounding counties. Is it bad management or just poor luck?
