A dispute over child custody turned violent Wednesday afternoon and left a 34-year-old man hospitalized with a single gunshot wound to the chest, said Thomas Davis, a Dothan Police Department spokesperson.

Police arrested 26-year-old Torey Lekensey Jones, of Christopher Drive, and charged him with attempted murder in connection with a shooting off South Park Avenue Wednesday evening. Police charged Jones with using a 9mm or .380-caliber handgun to shoot another man in a yard on Glenwood Drive, Dothan Police Capt. Larry Draughon said.

Jones is being held in the Houston County Jail on a $60,000 bond after he turned himself in to authorities late Wednesday night.

“We had several things happen, and all we know is one of them didn’t like the other one real bad,” Draughon said.

Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies surrounded a residence on South Park Avenue shortly after the shooting. After a two-hour standoff, investigators raided the home searching for the alleged gunman only to find the house empty.

Officers with the Dothan Police Department SWAT team, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and FBI agents searched for the gunman.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, and was in stable condition at Southeast Alabama Medical Center Thursday afternoon, Davis said. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Investigators arrested Jones and booked him in to the Dothan City Jail around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Dothan City Jail records.

Jones was previously arrested in October 2007 and charged with felony second-degree theft of property, according to court records.
