Some local parents have differing views of a proposed uniform policy for city school students.
Marie Ford, the mother of a Cloverdale Elementary School student and a Carver Magnet School student, says she supports the idea. Ford says she thinks uniforms will be convenient for parents and will reduce friction between students from differing economic classes. She also thinks a uniform policy would improve discipline and reduce inappropriate clothing at school.
“It’s hard to bust a sag in a pair of khakis,” she said.
Not everyone in Ford’s household shares her views. According to Ford, her kids hate the idea.
Patti Muller, the parent of a Northview High School student, said she isn’t sold on the idea. According to Muller, uniforms are boring and probably wouldn’t do much to cut down on class resentment, anyway.
“I think you’re still going to have cliques, no matter what you wear,” she said.
Kim Lampkin takes a different view.
“I love the uniform idea, I really do,” she said.
Lampkin believes the uniforms will save parents money on clothing and get kids to focus less on social status and more on education.
“They won’t have time to gloat about people’s clothes,” she said.
Sharon Dickinson has a unique perspective. Before moving to Dothan, Dickinson’s children attended a school in south Louisiana that required uniforms.
Dickinson said her experience taught her that uniforms aren’t the cure-all for discipline problems that they’re portrayed to be. According to Dickinson, enforcing current dress codes would likely have the same result as a uniform policy.
“I don’t think the benefits outweigh the freedom to wear what you want,” she said.
A committee will soon begin developing a uniform policy. The city school board will likely hear a recommendation from the committee within a month and vote on that recommendation by the end of the year.

I think uniforms are a great idea because as a parent of seven it is hard to shop on a budget. However, I also think that it would deter certain attire that children decide to wear to school...As a future educator I say go with the Uniforms...I dont understand why they waited as long as they have..I do feel that school is a place to learn not a place to see individuals with their undergarments or stomachs hanging out..As far as implenting a better dress code; I have seen dress codes implented and it seems not to work very well, so with this thought in mind, if you make everyone look alike then you have less cost when time to buy school clothes, less interference at school because of what one child is wearing versus another, and just possibly a happier place to attend school..

School uniforms is a nice idea, but untill parents (some do already) start raising the children with solid morals, respect for other people and the TEACHERS & AUTHORITY , and other students. And learn that they are in school to receive an education to be a productive individual in this world, it will not matter what our kids wear to school, be it uniforms or regular clothes. I do think uniforms is a good idea for safety reasons if not for anything else. This way the staff/parents will be able to tell if someone is on campus that should not be on campus.

As a single mother of two and all the headaches of shopping for the “right and acceptable” clothes, the school uniforms would be one of the greatest implementation the school board could do. We do not need a task force for this, just do it.

Yeah, if you think uniforms will change behavior, look at all the youth violence in the UK, where *all* schools require a uniform. Don’t kid yourself.
