Wallace Community College is looking for a few part-time instructors to help fill its growing enrollment’s increasing demand for courses.
Wallace is looking to hire about 15 adjunct instructors in the areas of English, computer information science, business, biology, fine arts and chemistry. In addition to these hires, the college wants to set up a pool of preapproved adjunct faculty in all disciplines, so it will be able to quickly fill other spots as they become available.
Stanley Aman, dean of academic affairs and health sciences, said in an e-mail that the adjunct professors are needed to meet increased student demand for courses, particularly in health-related fields of study. Wallace’s enrollment has seen steady growth in recent years.
Adjunct instructors teaching academic courses generally need a master’s degree in their field and classroom experience. Career-related adjuncts must meet specific professional licensure requirements.
Aman said pay for academic adjunct faculty is set at $454.75 per credit hour per semester (courses are usually 3-4 credit hours). Adjunct clinical/lab instructors in the health sciences are compensated with hourly pay based upon profession and degree level: a bachelor’s degree in nursing gets $26.75 per clock hour, master’s degree in nursing nets $28.89 per hour, and the doctorate level in nursing gets $31.03 per hour.
Aman praised the relevance and experience adjunct instructors can bring to the college.
“Clinical and/or laboratory adjuncts in the health sciences are skilled professionals who definitely bring ‘real world’ experiences to instruction,” Aman said in an e-mail. “Many nursing clinical instructors are employees of the facilities in which they are training students. Having knowledge of policies and procedures related to a specific institution is a definite benefit to the learning experiences of our students.”
To find out more about the adjunct positions, call Wallace’s human resources department at 556-2418.
