Dothan resident attacked by rabid raccoon

A raccoon which attacked a resident on Garden Lane in Dothan on Monday has tested positive for rabies.

According to the Houston County Health Department, the resident was working in their yard when the raccoon attacked them. The raccoon was tested and came back positive for rabies. The victim has started treatment to protect them from the rabies virus.

This is the 8th confirmed rabies case in the county this year.

Residents can take the following precautions to help prevent the spread of rabies:

1. Make sure pets are current on rabies vaccinations.

2. Warn children against playing with wild or stray animals.

3. Report stray animals to animal control.

4. If bitten by a stray animal, wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention.

i think most people try to catch the animal and therefore get bitten
