Holiday shopping safety tips from Dothan Police Department

With turkey day in the past and the holiday shopping season kicking off, area law enforcement has cautioned area motorists about safety while shopping and driving.

Dothan Police Capt. Larry Draughon urged shoppers to call the police if they see any suspicious activity.

“If someone does approach you with ill intent, we recommend you scream to get attention but scream fire and it will shock and make some people go away,” Draughon said. 

He also suggested people allow extra time to arrive at area businesses, and to be patient with traffic. He also reminded people police will be strictly enforcing illegal parking, especially because it often acts as a safety hazard keeping emergency vehicles from getting to area businesses.

Houston County Sheriff’s Capt. Antonio Gonzalez said extra Houston County Sheriff’s deputies will be on patrol on the major highways across the county, which will be funded through overtime pay by an Alabama traffic safety grant.

“Even with the economy the way it is people will still be out holiday shopping,” Gonzalez said. “We’re going to try and make sure we’re more vigilant in those shopping areas.”

Gonzalez said deputies will be looking for suspicious activity, including people looking into vehicles in parking lots. He said the security at some stores will escort people to their cars if asked.

Gonzalez also suggested women keep an eye on their purse as they shop and not leave it inside a shopping cart. He also recommended people be aware of scams with people walking around parking lots with sale offers for gift cards or credit cards.

“It’s always best to go shopping with friends and family,” Gonzalez said while suggesting people not shop alone.
