In a nation where the entertainment industry has cast off situation comedies for voyeuristic reality programming, the back-to-back major political party conventions offered the best of both worlds. Part scripted pageantry, part unscripted reaction, the televised portions of the political conventions captured the attention of millions of Americans in these last two weeks.

Recently, an e-mail about the percentage of Alabama public school students on free or reduced lunch popped into my inbox. Since I don’t trust most e-mails, I double checked the State of Alabama Department of Education’s Web site and the number was correct. Nearly 52 percent of all public school children in Alabama are on free or reduced lunch.
