Several locals to participate in all-star sports week

Twenty-one Wiregrass athletes and five coaches are bound for Huntsville this week, set to participate in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 12th Annual All-Star Sports Week.

For one of the rare times, the Wiregrass has at least one athlete participating in all eight sports.

The All-Star Sports Week starts Monday and runs through Friday at various locations in Huntsville.

Seven of the events feature upcoming seniors from the south against the north in competition. The other sport, football, has seniors from this past year on the two squads.

Thirteen different area schools are represented, including four from Northview and two each from Enterprise, Houston Academy, Pike County, Andalusia and Eufaula.

Northview athletes listed by the AHSAA are Alannah Vincent and Kacey Frazier in girls basketball, Patrick Reynolds in football and Caitlin Mullins in girls soccer.

Enterprise will have two athletes in girls soccer — Cassie Wilcox and Allison Larese. Andrew Mills of Enterprise was originally selected in boys soccer, but he had surgery for an ACL tear in his knee and will not participate.

Both Houston Academy’s representatives listed are in boys soccer — Justin Skaggs and Travis Gardner.

Pike County’s two athletes are both in football — Chris Moore and Darrell Reynolds.

Andalusia standout Nico Johnson is listed on roster for boys basketball and classmate Jessica Centner in softball.

Eufaula representatives chosen were Herbert Brooks in boys basketball and Clayton Slade in football.

Slade, a punter/kicker, is a replacement for Enterprise’s Parker Stinnett, who was originally named to the roster, but broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg in soccer earlier this summer and will not participate.

Others from the area listed to participate are Charles Henderson’s Dustin Smith (boys soccer), G.W. Long’s Cass Abercrombie (baseball), Houston County’s Edward Robinson (boys basketball), Barbour County’s Devondrick Richardson County (boys basketball), Pleasant Home’s Erin Boyd (softball), Carroll’s Akia Borders (volleyball) and Geneva’s David Simon (football).

Five area coaches will also be part of the All-Sports Week, all as south coaches.

Dothan’s Patricia Ball and Elba’s Susan Barnes (administrative) will help the south softball team, Drew Miller of G.W. Long in baseball and Barbour County’s Raymond White in boys basketball and Wayne Grant, formerly of Pike County, in football.

Competition starts Monday with a baseball doubleheader at Joe Davis Stadium, starting at 4 p.m.

Both the girls and boys soccer games are Tuesday at John Hunt Park with the girls at 5 p.m. and boys to follow.

A softball doubleheader is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Kiwansis Complex.

Thursday features volleyballl at 2 p.m., girls basketball at 6 p.m. and boys basketball at 8 p.m., all at Alabama-Huntsville’s Spragins Hall.
The football contest concludes the week on Friday at 7 p.m. at Alabama A&M’s Louis Crew Stadium.
