After completing a shift as a salesman at Dothan Toyota, Woodrow Dean waited patiently Thursday night at a stop light on his way home to Kinsey when he saw a pickup truck slam into the car stopped in the lane next to him.
“The head lights came out of nowhere,” Dean said. “It was like the vehicle had no brakes. It was like a train with no brakes.”
Dean said the red F-150 pickup truck was likely traveling 55 to 60 mph when it struck the four-door sedan stopped at the light near Southeast Alabama Medical Center. Dean immediately followed the pickup truck after it shifted into reverse and drove through the red light and sped toward Webb on Alabama Highway 52. Dean followed the truck for about three miles until it pulled off to the side of the highway.
“When he pulled over I passed him, and he proceeded to run me off the road,” Dean said. “Eventually he hit the black Lexus.”
Dean watched the pickup truck strike a second vehicle during a head-on collision within 10 minutes just inside the city of Webb. Dean said the pickup truck’s headlights were damaged and the driver of the Lexus likely did not see it coming as it swerved into their lane on Highway 52.
“It was like two vicious bulls going a 100 mph head to head,” Dean said of the crash.
Dean said the crash became personal for him because he has a family, including a wife and 2-year-old daughter at home.
“I have seen accidents before, but this is the worst accident I’ve ever witnessed,” Dean said. “So many innocent civilians don’t speak up at what they have seen or heard to help stop a problem.”
The crash left the driver of the pickup critically injured, and he was taken to the medical center for treatment, according to Webb Police Chief Chris Jerkins.
Firefighters from the Dothan and Webb Fire Departments worked for at least two hours using the Jaws of Life in an effort to free a Georgia woman from the Lexus. The severity of the woman’s injuries are unclear, but emergency workers had administered an IV to her while they worked to free her from the car.
The driver of the Lexus, the woman’s son, suffered cuts and bruises in the crash, and was also taken to the medical center, according to Jerkins.
The accident happened around 8:10 p.m. Jerkins did not know the names of anyone traveling in either of the vehicles.
“He was I guess trying to get away from that accident scene,” Jerkins said.
