It is no time to straddle the fence

It is curious that , on the one hand, the editors characterize the legislation co-sponsored by Sen. Harri Anne Smith as “morality and politics”, yet state that “there’s no doubt where she stands.” Really?

Proposing an amendment that has no chance of even serious consideration (as an experienced senator is surely aware) as an effort to pacify both sides on a contentious issue that effects only her district (for now) is capitulation, pure and simple.

A direct quote of yea or nea is a position. Offering a poll of constituents, as her bill proposes, sidesteps the obligation to lead that voters expect but rarely get from our elected officials.

Whether the position Sen. Smith seeks in the U.S. Congress affords the opportunity to pass laws that impact Country Crossings or not, for now she is our state senator. What’s more, if leaders are chosen solely for their tendency to vote by majority opinion, we do not need them.

Nothing unpopular or progressive or that goes against the prejudice of the majority — like slave freedom, for example — would have ever been enacted had leaders not stood against the tide of public opinion. Now is the time to step up and not straddle the fence.
