'Freedom is here to stay'

If Rebecca Wilkins had polled millions of citizens of the United States to come up with her favorite saying — “boo-hoo-hoo, used four times in her April 2 letter to the editor — she would probably have found millions who disagreed with her.
She should boo-hoo-hoo for the replica of outhouse toilet, because many military and civilians would have been proud to have a real outhouse toilet. However, they were proud to make do with slit trenches during World War II, and that probably includes the president’s father. We were proud of our country. I served President Franklin D. Roosevelt and all presidents, including Richard Nixon.
If we had the freedom of speech we have now, I don’t believe we would have seen VE Day or VJ Day. Imagine the lies that were told just to keep the enemy from knowing our plans. If the truth was told when we prepared for D-Day, it would have been a different outcome. Headlines would have said that troops would land, giving date and time. WWII’s Aleutian Island Campaign in 1942-43 — some call the forgotten war — was the only campaign fought on United States soil.
If we had let the Japanese go unchecked, Alaska would not be part of the United States. Sixty-five years ago, Armed Forces defeated and expelled invading Imperial Japanese forces from Alaska on Attu and Kiska Islands under extreme adverse weather and military conditions. All presidents of the United States have been accused of something. They held the course. Freedom is here and it is here to stay.
