A litmus test for candidates

I’m having a hard time deciding who to vote for in the Congressional race. Our founding fathers wrote that a person’s private life defines who they are and a person’s private life is what voters should look at when trying to define someone’s character.
The one question that would speak volumes is how a candidate tithes and gives to charity. It’s important to see what percentage of a candidate’s net and gross income goes to their church and what kinds of charities they donate to.
That will tell me a lot more about a candidate than what church they go to, how many degrees they hold or how much experience they have. Where and how a person spends their money shows the condition of their heart.
In my opinion, anyone who can’t find it within themselves to give at least 8 to 10 percent of their income to their church or charity has no business expecting the public trust. Let’s have a Dothan Eagle story on that and let’s go back at least a year before the election. There is no end to politicians who want to “help” people with someone else’s money.
A true statesman would be helping people with his own money long before an election.
