Growth is heading west
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2008 - 09:55 AM Updated: 11:07 AM
Born in 1918, my time here is limited so this is not for me, but hopefully will result in the best for the residents of Dothan.
The mayor and city commission are about to throw away hundreds of thousand dollars and build the new library in the very worst location to be convenient for most Dothan residents.
Several million dollars are being spent to make a park in a more convenient part of our town.
The public library is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. most weekdays, and is used by small children to senior citizens and all in between by the thousands each month, so convenience to those who use it should certainly be top priority.
Dothan has been moving like crazy to the west and so should the new library. Building the new library at Westgate Park would not only save hundred of thousands of dollars, it would be just one block off the Ross Clark Circle between U.S. highways 84 and 231 — more convenient to 90 percent of Dothan residents.
Business follows the population and downtown will not grow until Dothan grows more to the east, regardless of what the city does.
