ENTERPRISE — He’s back.

And this time he brought someone with him.

“He” is Charles Cole and the “someone” he brought with him to help coach the 2008-09 Enterprise-Ozark Community College Weevil Women in basketball is Brantley native and retired NBA player Wesley Person.

“I’m really proud to be back and to have someone with Coach Person’s credentials join us,” said Cole, who missed the 2007-08 season for health reasons.

“Wesley is well-known in the world of basketball and has contacts throughout the country.

“Besides that, he has the demeanor our players accepted right off the bat. We’re signing about 10 new players to go with our returning sophomores, and we’re excited about the prospects of the upcoming season.”

Person, who played collegiate basketball at Auburn University, spent 13 years in the NBA with Phoenix, Cleveland, Memphis, Portland, Atlanta, Miami, and Denver.

“I knew when I was in the NBA that I wanted a second career coaching college basketball,” Person said. “Coach Cole came to me and asked me if I’d like to coach with him. I’d never thought I’d start my college coaching career on the ladies’ side.

“But I always wanted to be a part of a community, and to make a difference in the lives of young people. This is a great opportunity for me to get into college coaching.”

Person said returning to his hometown with his family that includes four children has been rewarding.

“I was ready to come home from the big cities,” he said. “That’s why I cut my career short. It’s good to be back home, and the kids love it and I have more time to spend with them.”

Person learned a variety of coaching styles in his career.

“I want to give to young people from my experiences at all levels,” he said. “First of all, I want those I coach to be better people. I also want to make sure they go to class and get their education so that if basketball is not in their future they will have a degree and an education to help them be better people.

“As far as a philosophy of basketball, we plan to use an up-tempo style and teach kids how to play the game of basketball in a fundamentally-sound way.

“They have to learn that when all players on all teams can run and jump, players have to have true basketball skills.”
