Houston County and the City of Dothan are exploring an opportunity to compound their purchasing power.

The Houston County Commission approved a preliminary agreement Monday that would allow the two local governments to purchase some items jointly.

“We’ve been having a conversation with the City of Dothan about things we buy in common,” Commission Chairman Mark Culver said. “It just makes sense. Hopefully we can get a better price on some of those things that we know we both need.”

Culver said fuel and tires are two of several items that could be purchased together in hopes that ordering larger quantities would result in a lower price per unit.

The City of Dothan has not yet brought the item up for approval by the Commission.

“How much would it save? I’m not sure. I would hope that, over time, the savings realized would add up,” Culver said.

Also Monday, interim County Engineer Barkley Kirkland said all county roads closed due to recent flooding are open with the exception of Shiver Road between West Cook Road and the Geneva County line. The road is scheduled to be closed through Thursday, April 18, for repairs.
