Background: Matthews formerly held the position of District 1 City Commissioner. He serves on several civic boards and committees including the Juvenile Court Committee, Human Resource Development Corporation Board of Directors, Dothan Rotary Club and Dothan Master Gardeners. He is the past president of the Hawk Houston Boys and Girls Club, Wiregrass Lions Club and Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center. He is a deacon at First Missionary Baptist Church and a 33rd Degree Mason.
Platform: Matthews said Dothan has an aging population and sprouting youth whose basic needs can only be met with focused leadership, continued infrastructure improvements, short- and long-term planning and implementation of sound financial management and economic development strategies. Matthews said he plans to keep residents informed by holding informational meetings and community forums. He also said he will seek alternative solutions to issues of concern such as landfill expansion, the pool at Andrew Belle Center and potential changes within the City of Dothan school system. He also said he will encourage paving projects in partnership with Houston County and encourage more home improvements and business development in District 1.
