Geneva police recently arrested a 23-year-old man on a charge he stole from a local Subway restaurant.

Geneva Police Lt. Ricky Morgan said police arrested William Jared Evans, of Choctaw Street apartments, and charged him with misdemeanor third-degree theft of property.

Morgan said police made the arrest over the holiday weekend in what was originally reported as a robbery of the restaurant in Geneva.

But Morgan said after further investigation and review of the surveillance video, police determined the crime to be a theft.

Morgan said the investigation showed the suspect allegedly grabbed a small box containing petty cash before running out the door of the restaurant on Aug. 27.

Morgan said Evans admitted to the theft during an interview and that he said he took the money because he a “real bad drug problem, and needed the money for his habit.”
