OZARK -- Mixon Elementary School students have written letters to Santa to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and now school administrators would like local residents to add their Christmas wish lists to the pile.
Macy’s Department Stores will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every letter to Santa collected by the school. This includes letters solicited from the public.
The school got involved with the activity after one of its students became a candidate for a wish from the organization, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
Allison Cobb, Mixon Elementary assistant principal, said the event was a positive learning experience for students concerning community service.
“They know that they’re helping out by reaching out to the community,” she said.
Students at Mixon Elementary on Tuesday seemed enthusiastic about the opportunity to help other children by writing to Santa.
Russell Clark, 10, a fifth-grader, said he wrote a letter to Santa asking for a surprise.
“I think it’s pretty cool that they’re giving money to help people,” 11-year-old Nate Ward said.
Lauren Maynor, 10, said she enjoyed the opportunity to help out other children.
“It can help out kids in need,” 10-year-old fourth-grader Joy Lucas said.
For local residents who’d like to submit a letter, they can drop off their submission at the school by Thursday. Letters should be in an envelope.
