For its fifth anniversary event, Healthy Woman is hosting a speaker whose name might be familiar. Law enforcement agencies searched for her, while the whole world watched regular news updates. Elizabeth Smart was a teenager when she was abducted from her family’s Salt Lake City, Utah, home. She was found nine months later, and her captors were arrested.
Smart will be the guest speaker for the Healthy Woman event Thursday, Oct. 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Enterprise Civic Center. Tickets include dinner and a performance by Enterprise State Community College’s Entertainers.
Smart was abducted from her bedroom on June 5, 2002. She was 14 at the time. She was found March 12, 2003, in Sandy, Utah, about 18 miles away from her home, in the company of Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee. Both Mitchell and Barzee were indicted for Smart’s kidnapping but initially were ruled unfit to stand trial. Eventually, Barzee in 2009 and Mitchell in 2010, were convicted. Mitchell was sentenced on May 25, 2011, and the on Aug. 31, he was transferred to federal prison to begin serving a life sentence for his crimes.
The abduction of Smart and her recovery were widely reported and the subject of a made-for-television movie and a published book. Smart will speak of the abduction and the recovery and of faith, family and love.
Tickets are $25 per person general admission or $300 for a reserved table of eight. Dinner is included in the purchase price.
