When the Houston County Commission meets Monday, it is expected to approve a contract for its first new county engineer in more than 17 years.
Assistant County Engineer Barkley Kirkland, who currently serves as acting county engineer, will officially assume his mentor Mark Pool’s position on May 1, if the commission approves the contract.
Kirkland has been performing the duties of county engineer for months, as Pool has been taking accumulated medical and vacation days ahead of his retirement.
The commission voted in January to increase Kirkland’s pay and promote him to acting county engineer.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the commission will consider adopting a Houston County Water Authority bond issue resolution.
