A fire that started in an industrial nut roaster on Monday night resulted in heavy smoke, but no injuries or structural damage, said Chris Etheredge, battalion chief for the Dothan Fire Department.

The fire started a little before 10 p.m. at Bremner Food Group on Horace Shepard Drive, just off Napier Field Road.

Etheredge said authorities are still investigating the origination of the fire, which swept through a 30-foot-high, 10-foot-wide piece of equipment that roasts nuts rolling on a conveyor belt.

Fire was initially visible from the top of the roaster, giving it the appearance of a building fire, but that was not the case, Etheredge said.

Fire crews arrived on the scene and were able to get it under control quickly, he said.

Crews stayed until about 11:45 p.m. to make sure the fire was contained. During that time, a hidden fire in the exhaust system of the roaster flared up and was quickly contained.

Etheredge said the company had already shut down for the night, so operations were not impacted Monday evening. He didn’t know if plant operations were impacted on Tuesday, and officials with BFG did not return calls for comment.

Bremner Food Group is a snack company that makes crackers, cookies and nuts. The company’s Dothan building is popularly known as Nutcracker, the brand name of one of BFG’s products.
