Ozark authorities arrested a teenager Wednesday for the alleged second-degree rape of a 12-year-old girl, while the girl faces charges of false reporting.
DeHarvey K. Barber, 19, was charged with four counts of second-degree rape and one count of second-degree sodomy. Authorities said the girl is expected to face charges herself relating to obstructing governmental operations and false reporting to law enforcement.
The Dothan Eagle does not list the names of alleged sexual assault victims.
According to a statement from Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey, the charges stemmed from a “consensual” sexual relationship between Barber and the girl on at least four occasions.
An investigation began when the girl was transported to Dale Medical Center and a Dothan hospital on Wednesday after allegations she had been sexually assaulted.
Spivey said a suspect was taken into custody for questioning and identified by the girl, but the girl later admitted she falsified the report and had had consensual sex with Barber.
Barber was placed in the Dale County Jail under no bond, while the girl was released pending a court hearing.
Spivey said the Wiregrass Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force is continuing the investigation, and was assisted by OPD’s Criminal Investigative Division; the Dale County Sheriff’s Department; the Dale County District Attorney’s Office; the Alabama Department of Youth Services; and the Dale County Department of Human Resources.
