OZARK—Two Newton residents have been charged with torturing and willfully abusing a 4-year-old child in what one investigator called one of the worst child abuse cases he has seen.

A statement from Dale County Sheriff’s Investigator Mason Bynum said Andrew “Dylan” Chandler, 20, and Bridget Marie Chandler, 18, both of Newton, have been charged with torture and willful abuse of a child less than age 18 by a responsible person.

Based on new information, Bynum said those charges are expected to be upgraded to aggravated child abuse.

Both were placed in the Dale County Jail under $25,000 bail.

According to Bynum, the Newton Police Department contacted sheriff’s investigators last week in relation to a 4-year-old girl who was admitted to a local hospital after an apparent assault in Newton.

Bynum said the child suffered multiple bruises on her body and burn marks that were consistent with the girl being burned with a cigarette.

Bynum said the case appeared to be the worst child abuse case he had seen.

It was not immediately clear whether or not the Chandlers are the child’s parents.
