Last week the Headland Area Chamber of Commerce held its “Eye Opener” event at the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center.
The event was hosted by Gail DeFee, chamber president and Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center director.
“I want to thank all of you for coming today,” DeFee said. “This program is designed to not only inform members of the progress taking place throughout the chamber, but also to allow the organizations who host the event a chance to inform everyone on the progress taking place within that organization or business. Here at the center, we are staying active and constantly enjoying life to the fullest.
“Each month we have several activities planned for our members. Our activities range from going out to eat, to our members just enjoying being competitive in games. We also have several guests who attend our center to inform our members on health topics. Currently, we are planning our annual Valentine’s Day party. It is scheduled for February 13, beginning at 2 p.m., here at the center.”
DeFee also introduced several individuals who help make the center successful.
“I could not do what I do here, if it were not for my helpers,” DeFee said. “Carol Bedsole is a great asset to our center. When I ask for her help, she jumps right in, and I greatly appreciate her for her hard work. I also have Gloria Shepherd and Wilma Marsha. These three ladies do a lot for our center and our members, and they need to be recognized for their work. They do a fantastic job in making sure our members are staying active and healthy, not to mention, I could not get everything accomplished that I must do without their help.”
Rhonda Harrison, executive director of the chamber, was also in attendance for the event.
“I hope you all have enjoyed this event,” Harrison said. “I want to give a little update on the progress taking place at the chamber. We have recently had a little updating take place at the chamber, and it is looking great. We are also now preparing for our Miss Headland Pageant, which is scheduled for March 1 and our first ever ‘Business Showcase.’ The showcase is scheduled for March 4, and this year’s theme will be Mardi Gras. So, make plans to attend, decorate and spotlight your business. It is going to be an event full of fun.”
Harrison also informed all in attendance that membership dues are coming in for 2014.
“We are very excited about 2014,” Harrison said. “As you can see, we are planning a very busy year, and we look forward to working with all of our members. We also look forward to reaching out to attract to members to the chamber.”
