Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley warned this week that as many as 24,000 jobs could be eliminated if federal government spending cuts go into effect on March 1.
That sounds bad enough. But it’s significantly worse: Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told Congress that the sequestration cuts could force him to shorten the work week for the 800,000 civilian employees working for the Department of Defense. In an area like ours with a lot of civilian defense jobs, that’s a frightening prospect.
