I am writing to express my concern over an article in the July 29 Eagle ("Utility regulators supporting coal industry"). Commissioners are elected to use their judgment in arriving at decisions in the best interests of all Alabamians. No problem there.
The problem, in my view, is the statement by Chip Beeker, who is quoted as stating, "God created coal in Alabama, and no one has a right to push a policy that runs against God's plan."
I sincerely hope Mr. Beeker has been misquoted. If the statement is accurate, it is presumptuous at best and blasphemous at worst. The issue is complex, and demands considered judgment, not outrageous comments such as this.
The citizens of Alabama have a right to expect better. Invoking the Lord's name in what is, after all, a political issue is crass demagoguery at its basest. As Mr. Beeker assumes his position on the commission, he should show more maturity and judgment in the performance of his duties and temper his public comments with common sense rather than offending the religious sensibilities of our citizens.
