Vacations, furniture, historic photos, jewelry and more will highlight a silent auction in conjunction with the signature fundraiser of the year for Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1.
The event “Sip, Celebrate and Give” will be held Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Loft on Foster. It includes live music, heavy hors’ d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are $15 each or $25 for two and can be purchased at the door.
Wiregrass United Way 2-1-1 executive director David Duke said 2-1-1 is the conduit between people in need and agencies or others who can provide services. Since its inception six years ago, Wiregrass 2-1-1 has fielded 80,000 calls and made 140,000 referrals.
“We believe a lot of people depend on us now,” Duke said.
Duke said 2-1-1 operates on a $140,000 annual budget, the vast majority of which comes from local funds. Duke said 2-1-1 conducts several fundraisers throughout the year, but considers Sip, Celebrate and Give its primary event.
Duke said local residents have donated several items for a silent auction which will take place during the event. Among the items for auction include a four-day, three-night vacation to Savannah, Georgia, 1900-era framed photos of downtown Dothan, a maple chest, queen bed, jewelry and more.
Wiregrass 2-1-1 helps connect residents in need with community services and volunteer opportunities. Many calls come from individuals seeking financial assistance for housing, food and health care. Some, however, deal with mental health issues, addiction problems, and legal issues.
Duke said efforts have begun to establish a 2-1-1 club consisting of 211 residents who pledge to donate $100 annually.
