The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office throughout summer will be stepping up patrols around bridges in the county.

According to Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth, the measure from Sheriff Dave Sutton is intended to curb underage drinking and prevent any possible alcohol-related deaths on roadways.

“In the summertime -- especially on the weekends and afternoons with school being out-- some of these bridges have swimming holes and sometimes underage drinking happens around these areas,” Whitworth said. “Our patrol keeps someone from getting hurt, because we’re hoping someone doesn’t get on the highway after drinking.”

Whitworth said deputies will check under bridges, around road overpasses and at swimming areas in county rivers or creeks.

According to Whitworth, this has been a practice at CCSO for some time.
