Dreams of a state championship for the 2018-19 Enterprise State Community College Boll Weevils were dashed in a 70-65 loss to Shelton State Tuesday in the Alabama Community College Conference Tournament being contested at Lawson State.
The loss eliminated the Boll Weevils from the tournament and left them with an overall 18-11 record that includes a 10-4 South Division season total.
Enterprise, the No. 3 seed from the division, defeated Bevill State in the tournament’s first round played in Ray Lolley Gym Friday to advance to Birmingham.
Four Weevils, including two non-starters, scored in double figures in the season-ending loss.
Non-starter Joseph Womack led ESCC with 15 points; starters Ryan Davis (13 points) and Kainan Pouncey (11 points) and non-starter Myikil Wilson (10 points) accounted for most of Enterprise’s offense output.
“Joseph did a nice job coming off the bench and leading us in scoring,” said ESCC veteran coach Jeremaine Williams. “Some of our guys didn’t score like they’ve been scoring all year and that hurt us.
“But rebounding is what hurt us the most; they had a 7-footer inside and some big guards outside; those guys got the rebounds and got two and three more put-back shots. We changed some of what we were doing offensively and defensively to adjust, but at the end of the day, size beat us.
“But we had an overall good season and I’m proud of the way our guys played and how they prepared; we’re down but not out and will be back next season!”
Sophomores Pouncey, Shedrick Cooper, Jordan Hardy, Deshunte Smith, Mathew Mazique and Lorenzo Glass ended their ESCC careers.
The 2018-19 Enterprise roster included freshmen Davis, Wilson, Womack, Devin Thomas, Demitri Galette, Zaiver Greenwood, Ryan Sanders and Calen Murry.
