A late opportunity for Enterprise to drive the field ended on a fourth down incompletion Friday night as the Wildcats fell, 30-27, to Montgomery’s Park Crossing High.
Josh McCray caught a touchdown and ran in another as part of the new offense of head coach Rick Darlington, which doesn’t actually feature a quarterback on the roster. Jackson Darlington -- who takes the majority of the snaps -- is listed as a fullback in the run-heavy attack.
After Enterprise tailback Mykal Johnson scampered 70 yards on the first play from scrimmage, McCray got his first touchdown with 4:58 left in the first quarter. He hauled in a ball from Darlington, who threw a total of nine passes in the game, and leveled a defender on his way to a 35-yard touchdown that brought the score to 13-8 in favor of Enterprise.
Park Crossing responded a few minutes later with a 30-yard pass over the top of the defense, but the Thunderbirds failed to get the two-point conversion.
Darlington and company scored again in the second quarter after an 11-play, 77-yard drive that ended with Darlington powering his way to pay dirt from a yard out.
The Thunderbirds led 22-19 at the half after a long pass to the corner of the end zone that was bobbled, but secured, by the Park Crossing receiver. The Thunderbirds went straight up the middle to convert the two.-pointer.
Late in the third, Park Crossing looked to put the game out of reach. Johnson put the ball on the turf for Enterprise and it was scooped up and returned 35 yards for the score. After another successful two-point try, the Thunderbirds took a 30-19 lead into the final quarter.
The Wildcats fought back, orchestrating a nine-play drive that ended with McCray slicing through the defense for a three-yard touchdown with 9:35 remaining. Johnson outraced the defense to the corner of the endzone to add two points -- the final of the game for Enterprise -- and bring the score to 30-27.
Wildcat defenders clamped down late on a 10-play drive from Park Crossing to give Darlington and the Enterprise offense a shot to score with 3 minutes left.
Darlington was taken down for a five-yard loss on third down to set up fourth-and-long, and his final pass of the game fell incomplete.
Enterprise will begin regular season action on Aug. 23 in Wildcat Stadium against the North Miami Beach Chargers.
