It took a trip overseas to make Ashley Martin realize the possibilities in Eufaula.
After teaching for a dozen years at Eufaula High School and Wallace Community College, Martin has launched Azalea Ventures: Tours and Excursions in Eufaula.
“My husband, West, and I went on a trip to London and had to book several tours in the process,” Martin said. “I said, ‘I could do this in Eufaula.’”
Thus, Martin had her first tour in April, launched the website – azaleaventures.org – in May, and has had at least one tour of her hometown ever since.
Guests to Azalea Ventures can tour downtown Eufaula and its well-known historic districts by walking or via Segways – the company has nine available.
“People keep calling for tours,” said Martin, a past president of the Friends of Fendall Hall and a volunteer at The Shorter Mansion. “People can see Eufaula anyway they wish. If you want a pontoon boat, we will hook you up with that. We can get you in touch with fishing guides. You know, a lot of people that come here don’t have boat licenses. We can also set you up on a hunting trip. There is a nature walk and we can give history lessons, which are what most people want.”
Martin has a master’s degree in history. She once worked in Mobile in the tourism industry.
Martin said people can read about what all Azalea Ventures has to offer via its website, Facebook, Instagram or on TripAdvisor. The name Azalea Ventures derived from the first street Martin lived on in Eufaula – Azalea.
