The Boys & Girls Clubs of Lake Eufaula celebrated its fifth winning year in the Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities’ SERC Martin Luther King, Jr. Basketball Challenge with a Basketball Banquet and Awards Ceremony held at the Chattahoochee Courts Sports Complex on May 18.

The youth were fed buffet style thanks to Josh Congress and Jack’s Family Restaurant. The keynote speaker was Dr. Hans Rice of PT Solutions who spoke of a young man with misplaced confidence. As he shared his personal story with our young men, they were completely enthralled in his words and became excited when they realized he was talking about himself as a youth. His parting words to youth were, “Never let your current circumstances hinder your future. Aim for what you want instead of focusing on where you are.”

For more than 20 years, the Alabama Housing Authorities have implemented a sports program for youth in public housing to promote academics and good citizenship. A portion of the sports program includes the MLK Jr. Basketball Challenge. The tournament is a weekend filled with great basketball, motivational speakers, and education enrichment. Tournaments have landed the teams in places such as Lagrange, Georgia, Knoxville, Tennessee, Laurel, Mississippi and Bowling Green, Kentucky. Both teams have won 1st and 2nd place in each division for five consecutive years.
