The 6-year-old child who drowned in the Chattahoochee River was the son of a former Eufaula resident.

Jeremiah Melton went missing Sunday night. His body was found Tuesday morning near the National Infantry Museum at Fort Benning and Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center in Columbus, Georgia. His body was found on the third day of the search about seven miles from downtown Columbus by Columbus Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel.

Melton was the stepson of Kendrick Davis, a 2008 graduate of Eufaula High School who now works in Columbus.

Witnesses saw Melton fall into the river after 7 p.m. while standing on an island near the last rapid on the Chattahoochee Whitewater course.
