January 29, 1928 October 13, 2018. Ruth Helen Jones Rivers, considered herself a truly fortunate woman, and enjoyed a blessed life since her birth on January 29, 1928 in Eufaula, Alabama. Her parents, the late Moses and Amy (Upshaw) Jones, welcomed her into this world as this only child, and she had great pride in knowing that she was the first grandchild born to the late Lovette and Lizzie (Hardaway) Jones. As a young girl during a Thursday night revival at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Eufaula, Alabama she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Although she did not always have an easy life in her 90 years, it would not have been complete without her Heavenly Father. Her faith in Him helped her to be able to live through it all. She began her formal education in Barbour County and truly learned its value at the great A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham, AL. After leaving Eufaula as a young girl, she lived in Birmingham, Alabama, Cincinnati, Ohio and East Chicago, Indiana calling each of these places home. Loving and dear aunts, Elizabeth Chatham and Laura Jones, molded her into a young lady. Her husband and life partner, Mr. Garnette River grew her into a wife and mother in East Chicago. Out of this union came the true loves of her life, her daughter and five sons. Services were held Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Sixth Ave. Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, where Dr. John L. Cantelow, III is pastor. Internment was at Valhalla Cemetery in Birmingham, AL.
