HOLMES COUNTY, Florida – A Panama City man is behind bars after a carjacking that led to a pursuit and three crashes in Holmes County Wednesday evening.
According to law enforcement, the carjacking occurred at the Sunoco in Ponce de Leon, Florida. The victim said a white male forcibly took her red Camaro while she was pumping gas. A family member attempted to follow the vehicle to the rest area off Highway 81 with the intention of stopping the vehicle, but the suspect collided with the family member’s vehicle.
The suspect -- identified as Larry Henderson of Panama City -- fled east on Highway 90 striking another vehicle along the way. Deputies intercepted the vehicle in Westville, Florida, and initiated a pursuit east on Highway 90 at high rates of speed.
Henderson continued into Bonifay, Florida, where deputies, Bonifay Police, and the Holmes County EMS stopped traffic at Highways 79 and 90 for safety. The suspect then went through parking lots of the store at the intersection of 79 and 90, and then headed south on Hwy. 79. The suspect continued to drive in a reckless manner until he lost control and slid sideways into the rear of a Toyota pickup, causing the Toyota to overturn.
Henderson then fled on foot. When a passerby stopped to help, Henderson jumped in the back of passerby’s vehicle and hid as the vehicle traveled down County Road 280. The driver wrecked after realizing Henderson was in his SUV, and the suspect fled on foot once again.
Holmes Correctional Institute deployed its K9 team and was able to track the suspect and take him into custody.
Henderson, who was on probation in Florida, faces charges in Holmes County of carjacking, fleeing and attempted to elude, reckless driving, driving on suspended license, and leaving the scene of an accident.
Additional charges are pending in Washington County.
