Members of the Chipola Amateur Radio Club (call sign W4BKD) will participate in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22 ending Sunday, June 23 at 1 p.m.
Chipola Amateur Radio Club will be operating from the Jackson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Marianna.
Field Day is an annual Amateur Radio (ham radio) exercise encouraging emergency communications preparedness among amateur radio operators. Last year, over 35,000 people participated.
The event demonstrates Amateur Radio’s ability to work reliably under almost any conditions and from any location. All without the need for cell phones, the Internet or commercial power.
This year's event is particularly significant following the devastation caused by Hurricane Michael, which interrupted or destroyed much of the critical communications infrastructure in our area. Volunteer Amateur Radio operators from Jackson County and Alabama worked with Jackson County emergency officials to provide critical communications following the storm.
Amateur Radio is open to everyone. There are programs for people with disabilities and there is no age limit. Kids as young as 6 have studied for and received their ham radio license.
The Chipola Amateur Radio Club regularly conducts introductory Amateur Radio classes and license exams. If you are interested in Amateur Radio or would like more information, contact Brian McClure NW4R at 850-427-2426 or via email at CARC.W4BKD@gmail.com.
