If you have ever enjoyed one of the cakes sold at The Oaks Restaurant, chances are it was hand made by Marty Carr.
This behind-the-scenes lady has been sharing her talent for many years. Marty began working for Associated Contractors right out of high school. On the side, she supplemented her income by selling baked cakes during the holidays.
“My mom taught me to bake,” explained Marty. After 25 years of dedicated service, Associated Contractors closed their doors. Marty went to work for Chuck Neel for a few years and later Ted Tyus, all the while continuing to bake her delicious cakes. “People began ordering cakes all year and I would take them to work,” she added.
Unfortunately, the real estate and housing market changed leaving Marty without a job with a contracting company. However, Marty’s husband Bennie came to the rescue.
“I remodeled my man cave and Marty got licensed,” Bennie stated proudly.
While she was ensuring all safety certifications were obtained, one of Marty’s regular customers told her The Oaks Restaurant needed someone to bake cakes.
“Eddie Davis, previous owner, asked for a red velvet cake and after one bite he said when can you start?” Marty disclosed humbly. As her business expanded at The Oaks Restaurant, Marty was still selling cakes on the side for birthdays, weddings and similar events. So, she felt like it was time to open a store front in Marianna.
Cakes by Marty will be opening soon. Marty plans to continue providing cakes for The Oaks Restaurant once it is reopened, but she will be expanding to accommodate more orders from friends and new customers in the community. Her specialty is “classic old-fashioned” cakes. However, she can often copy photos and create delicious cakes from ideas provided by customers. Marty has made beautiful wedding cakes, birthday cakes and sports cakes. Her cakes have been ordered from all around the world, including North Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and Iraq. Marty also makes cupcakes and she added “other things might come later.”
Marty has been married to her high school sweetheart, Bennie, for more than 40 years and he is the biggest fan of her cooking. “She cooks for me all the time and it’s always great!” he said with a smile. The couple has three sons and four grandchildren. They are expecting a fifth grandchild in February.
Cakes by Marty will be open at 4477A Jackson Street, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Marty can be contacted by telephone at 850-209-7449 or email at email@example.com.
