The Cottondale Hornets fell to Blountstown Tigers 49-45 in overtime in the the second round of the 1A District 2 tournament Friday night in Vernon.

The first quarter of the game was a slow burner, but the Hornets were able to take and maintain a steady lead.

The Hornet were up 14-7 at the start of the second and they were able to stay on top but it proved to be a tough fight.

At the half, Cottondale was up 21-17.

Things didn’t get any easier in the third but the Hornets were able to fend off the Tigers until the final minutes of the quarter, when a Blountstown rally cut the Hornet lead to a single point, 29-28.

The fourth was a battle for every point where the score slowly crawled upward and no one could keep the advantage for long.

After eight minutes of frantic play, the game was tied up 39-39 and it looked like the outcome would be determined by a Tiger free throw with 1.4 second on the clock.

Then he missed the shot and the game was thrown into overtime.

The clock was set for four minutes and away we went.

Cottondale was able to match Blountstown at first, but as the clock ran down the Tigers began to pull away.

In the end Blountstown won 49-45 to advance to the championship game against Graceville.
