The Marianna Bulldogs defeated Northside Methodist Academy in a close 6-5 game Tuesday.
Northside got on the board first by stringing together walks, a sacrifice bunt and a player being hit by a pitch, but the Bulldogs were able to limit the damage. Wilton Pittman and Loren Waldron handled the sacrifice bunt with Blayne Hewett catching a line drive and Wilton Pittman getting a strikeout.
The Bulldogs started the bottom of the inning with a double by Pittman. He stole third and came home on a single by Hewett to tie things up. A triple by Caleb Torbett brought in Hewett to make it 2-1 Marianna and Bozeman hit a hard grounder to score Hewett and make it 3-1.
In the second a pair of strikeouts by Pittman started things off. They got a single but he got caught in a run down between Pittman Waldron and Torbett for the third out.
The Bulldogs were up again and singles by Will Saunders and Beau Alday set the table. A sacrifice fly by Hewett scored Saunders, but Alday was left stranded.
A fly ball to Hewett started the third for Northside, but it was able to get two runners on the bases and scored one of them on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 Marianna.
Pittman got a strikeout and Ben Wiggins came in to get the second strikeout.
The bottom of the third started with a double by Torbett, but he was caught in a double play with Wiggins.
Tristan Bozeman bunted for a single and made it to third on errors where he was driven in by Brady Donaldson to make it 5-2 Marianna.
The fourth started with Pittman catching a pop up for the first out and a ground out managed by Bozeman and Pittman, but Northside was able to score two runs to make it 5-4 Marianna.
In the bottom Alday singled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
Marianna was staying on point defensively in the fifth. The first two batters were vanquished when Alday caught a fly ball and Bozeman got a ground out with Pittman.
Northside got a pair of walks, but a fielder’s choice to Torbett wrapped up the inning.
Bozeman got a single to start Marianna’s at bat and he was able to get to third thanks to a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt by Donaldson, but a strikeout and ground out left him marooned.
The sixth was quick.
Waldron was pitching for Marianna and he got two strikeouts and assisted Hewett with the third.
Pittman was walked for the Bulldogs, but strikeouts and a ground out left him at third.
Northside had one at bat left and they made a determined effort.
A dropped third strike and a double set up a run to make it 6-5 Marianna, but a strikeout by Waldron, a pop up to Torbett and a ground out wrapped up the game in the Bulldogs favor.
