An unidentified Dothan High School student was arrested Monday after a school resource officer found a loaded handgun in his possession.
According to a release from the Dothan Police Department, the officer was notified that a student may be in possession of a gun on campus. The student was removed from class and the SRO conducted an investigation that revealed the loaded handgun. According to police, further investigation revealed the gun had been reported stolen after a recent theft from a vehicle in Dothan.
The student has been charged with one count of certain persons forbidden to possess a pistol and three counts of unlawfully breaking and entering a motor vehicle.
Alabama law states “no person shall knowingly with intent to do bodily harm carry or possess a deadly weapon on the premises of a public school.” The crime is a Class C felony.
The student’s name and any previous charges are being withheld by the Dothan Police Department because he is a juvenile.
