Dothan police are looking for information in the shooting death of a 30-year-old woman at a Dothan apartment complex over the weekend.
Dothan Police Sgt. Maurice “Mac” Eggleston said in an email that police responded Saturday to a suspicious circumstances call in the 200 block of Sweetwater Drive where a woman was found dead inside her apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.
“They’ll investigate as if it’s a homicide until it’s said otherwise,” Eggleston said.
Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said he pronounced Iris Saecho Mitchell dead at 2:28 p.m. Saturday. He said a man, who was the victim’s roommate, called the police after he arrived at the apartment around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Byrd said Mitchell was from the Wetumpka area, but had most recently been living at Sweetwater apartments. He did not know how long the victim had lived in Dothan.
“It looks like it’s a homicide,” Byrd said. “It’s just the way the body was found, and the circumstances around it.”
Dothan Police Capt. Carlton “Bubba” Ott Jr., the supervisor over the criminal investigation division (CID), said police investigators are treating the shooting as a death investigation. Ott said police have found a weapon, but they’re also not sure yet if it was the weapon used during the shooting.
“We have to keep our perspectives open,” Ott said. “We’re still running down some leads.”
