A man shot dead Thursday night on Meadow Court in Dothan appeared to have been armed when police arrived, and authorities are treating the shooting as a matter of self-defense.
Dothan Police responded to a report of a firearm assault in the 500 block of Meadow Court Thursday around 10:20 p.m. A man had been shot to death in the front yard of a residence. Police later identified the man as Jay Greene Hollis, 24, of Dothan.
According to Police Sgt. Ronald Hall, a preliminary investigation indicated a dispute had occurred between Hollis and the resident, leading to the incident. Hall said the shooter and Hall were familiar with each other, but did not elaborate on the relationship or cause of the dispute. After questioning, police chose not to file charges in the case.
Alabama self-defense laws allow residents to use deadly force if it can be reasonably believed there is an imminent threat of unlawful deadly force by another person.
Hall said evidence collected will be presented to a grand jury, which could elect to indict or no-bill the case.
Meadow Court is located just off South Alice Street, close to the Henry Green housing complex.
