A recent uptick in violent crime incidents in Dothan inspired District 1 Commissioner Kevin Dorsey to organize a “Kick Crime to the Curb” forum Thursday.
“We’ve had a lot of shootings. We had one murder in my district,” he said. “With kids out of school, it’s a good time to get people aware (of safety tips).”
A rash of violent events has occurred in various areas of Dothan – particularly in April and May. Police officers have responded to the following incidents within the past two months:
>> May 25: the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Shawn Callins on Florida Avenue. The incident also injured a pregnant woman, who had to deliver her baby prematurely.
>> May 19: a shooting at Fairfield Inn off Ross Clark Circle injured one woman.
>> May 5: a man assaulted two police officers and a shooting injured one on Dusy Street.
>> May 4: three people were shot at a Denton Road address.
>> April 19: a triple shooting on Arlington Avenue resulted in the death of 35-year-old Cornelius Williams.
Dorsey said members of the Dothan Police Department will accompany him to the forum, which will be at the downtown library at 6 p.m. Officers will discuss safety tips and promote the effectiveness of neighborhood watch programs in combating crime.
Dorsey said he will also assess the lighting needs of neighborhoods during the forum.
The commissioner wants to assure residents that, despite the recent incidents, Dothan remains a safe place to live.
