The body of a 6-year-old boy from Dothan believed to have accidentally fallen in the Chattahoochee River near Columbus, Georgia, has been located.
Columbus Fire Marshal Ricky Shores told the Dothan Eagle Tuesday morning, the boy’s body was located at 7:47 a.m. eastern time.
Emergency personnel and volunteers searched from the time the incident was reported Sunday evening until dark delayed the search; and the search resumed Monday morning until dark delayed the search until daybreak Tuesday morning.
According to wire reports, first responders contacted Georgia Power to close a nearby dam, lowering the amount of water flowing into the swift river.
Boats, helicopters, and other tools were used to search for the child.
The identity of the child has not yet been released.
“I want to personally offer our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” Shores said.
The Island is a popular area located just off of the river walk near The Chattahoochee River Club. The location features a small pedestrian bridge that allows visitors to the Chattahoochee River to get close to a Class 4-rapid near the end of the 1.5 mile long Chattahoochee whitewater course.
