Beginning Jan. 1, a new Alabama law shortens the maximum time to receive unemployment compensation from 26 weeks to 14 weeks.

If an unemployed person participates in a job training program approved by the Alabama Department of Labor, unemployment benefits can be extended by five weeks.

The new law also increases the maximum weekly benefit from $265 to $275.
