Enterprise’s Emilia Smith won a playoff over Auburn’s Morgan Jones on Thursday in Scottsboro to win a qualifying spot to the 71st U.S. Girls Junior Championship next month in Wisconsin.
Smith, who will be a senior at Enterprise High this fall, fired a 1-under 71 on the Goose Pond Colony course during her round, tying with Jones for second place. The two went to a playoff on the 18th hole to decide the second qualifier. Smith earned a par on the hole and Jones a bogey, giving Smith the position.
Smith, along with winner Michaela Mored of Huntsville (5-over-67), will play at the U.S. Girls Junior on July 22-27 at the SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point, Wis.
Providence Christian golfer Lauren Thompson of Midland City finished tied for fifth at Thursday with a 74.
Thompson along with Enterprise’s Ashley-Sinclair Curtis both qualified for the 44th Girls Junior PGA Championship in Hartford, Conn., during the Alabama-NW Florida Section Girls Junior PGA Championship on June 13th in Spanish Fort.
Curtis, a senior at Enterprise High, won the event at TimberCreek Golf Club with a three-day 146 score. Thompson, a senior at PCS, earned the second spot, winning a three-player, three-hole playoff after finishing with a 150 score.
Thompson and Curtis will compete at the Junior PGA on July 9-12 at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford.
