Troy University has called a press conference for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Stadium Club to introduce its next athletics director.
The job came open April 4 when Jeremy McClain, who had been Troy’s AD since 2015, was hired for the same position at Southern Mississippi.
McClain’s resignation from Troy came after a busy first quarter of 2019 when he hired Chip Lindsey as the Trojans’ head football coach on Jan. 10 and Scott Cross as head basketball coach on March 26.
Lindsey replaced Neal Brown, who was 35-16 in four years at Troy before he was hired as West Virginia’s head coach in early January. Cross followed Phil Cunningham, who led Trojan basketball for six years before he was fired after this season.
“Join us Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Stadium Club at the Vet as we welcome our new Director of Athletics,” Troy Athletics sent out via Twitter Monday afternoon.
Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., said the search for McClain’s successor drew national interest.
“We had well over 60 very serious candidates and probably 40 of those at least – maybe 45 of them – met all the criteria. So it’s really a difficult process,” Hawkins said last month. “I might add, at least six of the current candidates are current ADs at Division I.”
An internal committee headed by Dr. Doug Patterson, special assistant to the Chancellor and a former Troy vice chancellor, has handled this search.
Deputy AD for internal operations and senior woman administrator Sandy Atkins has served as the interim athletics director. She also served in that capacity before McClain was hired in August of 2015.
