A man wanted for allegedly stealing checks from mailboxes and altering the checks was apprehended on July 2, according to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office.
Charles Rhodes, 40, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla., is charged with third-degree theft of property and third-degree forgery.
He is currently being held in the Coffee County Jail.
Rhodes was apprehended on Tuesday, shortly after a social media post from CCSO asked for assistance in locating the man.
On May 17, a theft of property report was taken from a victim on Coffee County Road 223 in Elba. The victim stated that on or about April 27, 2019 a payment for a bill was placed in her mailbox. The victim stated the check was written for $37.44. The victim stated that when the check cleared the bank that it had been altered to the amount of $875 along with the payee name.
During the investigation, Coffee County Sheriff Investigators discovered that similar incidents had occurred in surrounding law enforcement jurisdictions. Coffee County Sheriff's Investigators are working with Enterprise Police Department, Dothan Police Department, Ozark Police Department, Walton County Sheriff's Office and DeFuniak Springs Police Department.
On Tuesday, information called in to Enterprise Police Department led police to Marco's Pizza, where suspect Rhodes was identified as the suspect in the theft of property case.
Coffee County Sheriff's Investigators along with other agencies are continuing their investigation with more charges pending.
